Evening Worship and Fireside Chat,
St George's College
16 May 2019

The worship was held in the Chapel and led by the Revd Jacob Legarda, Archbishop, Chaplain, Anglican Dioceses of Perth.

The liturgy for the occasion acknowledged the continuity between Jewish and Christian worship and appropriately chosen for its suitability for those of either faith. It featured sacred choral works – including some  from  the Jewish  tradition – sung by the  Winthrop Singers and  directed by  Dr Nicholas Bannan.  Following the service, the attendees dined with the resident students and then congregated for the fireside chat with guest speaker, Ms Helen Bryant interviewed by historian Brian  Wills-Johnson, Honorary Life Member and former President of the College. Helen was born in London to Bohemian refugees who survived the Shoah. Helen made Aliyah to Israel and then in 1973 emigrated to Asutralia where she is now a teacher, leader and Life Member at Temple David Congregation, Mount Lawley.

Film: Ushpizin
26 May 2019

Ushpizin (roughly translated to “holy guests”), is a revelatory and humourous look at the daily lives of ultra-Orthodox Jews in modern-day Israel. Disarmingly funny, the film startles in its universality, depicting members of the community in scenes of ordinary living, drinking, smoking, dancing, arguing, reconciling and grappling with their faith. Ushpizin is directed by Gidi Dar and written by Shuli Rand in Hebrew, with English subtitles.
